The annual ICCO European Forum is an opportunity for PR practitioners across Europe to come together and discuss the most urgent challenges they face across the continent. Organised by ICCO’s European PR associations, the event is used to both facilitate debate and to progress new ideas and joint initiatives for PR agencies across Europe.

15:05 – 16:40 (CET) Modern Communication Challenges in Society

  1. Introduction and Overview (15:05 – 15:20 CET)

A breif background to the work that ICCO is doing to combat modern communication challenges and the partnership with the Council of Europe.

Yannick Meneceur, Head of Digital Development Unit, Council of Europe and AI Expert

An overview of the three topics on which ICCO members advise the Council of Europe: Freedom of Speech, Media Literacy and Artificial Intelligence. Patrick will update on the rapidly changing legislative landscape for these areas and how communicators can influence these discussions.

  1. Freedom of Media and Media Literacy (Panel, 15:20 – 16:05 CET)

The panel will discuss balancing freedoms and rights with censorship, misinformation, fake news, advertising and PR standards on social media and safeguarding trust in traditional media. What role to PR agencies play?

  1. Artificial Intelligence Ethics in Social Media (Panel, 16:05 – 16:40 CET)

The panel will explore how PR professionals can advise businesses and policymakers on ethical use of social media algorithms, psychological profiling, targeted PR and advertising, data mining, facial recognition – how this technology shouldn’t be used and how it can be harnessed for positive uses.

16:40 – 17:25  (CET) Overcoming Vaccine Communication Challenges

The panel will discuss recent and future health communications challenges with a focus on vaccination including vaccine hesitancy, communicating with anti-vax movement, communicating complex scientific research effectively, employee engagement, international collaboration

17:25 – 17:45 (CET) Re-framing Climate Change Communications

John Brown, CEO and Founder, Don’t Cry Wolf

As a contribution to the UN’s COP26 this year, ICCO and PRCA conducted research on climate change communications and the role of PR professionals and agencies. This will be shared with the group along with information about the ongoing work to combat misinformation and re-frame the communications approach to climate change.
